Caminha has been officially crowned one of the nine most charming small towns in Portugal by World Atlas—and it’s a key stop on the Coastal Portuguese Camino. This recognition makes it the only village along the entire coastal route to receive this kind of mention. (The only other Camino town honored was Agueda on the main inland path.) See why this stunning riverside destination is drawing so much attention.
What makes the town of Caminha so charming?
It’s likely a perfect storm of factors. Perhaps it’s the idyllic location right on the northern border with Spain, where the Minho and Coura rivers meet, offering spectacular water views. Maybe it’s the quiet, long sandy beaches, or perhaps the sheer tranquility of its medieval cobblestone streets.
While the World Atlas article didn’t detail its exact criteria, this rare combination is truly special. Very few places in the world blend such rich history, serene views, and profound tranquility into a single, compact destination like Caminha does.

What can you see and do in Caminha?
Indeed, the first thing you will notice as you approach the city limits are the remains of its fortress walls. Built in the 13th century for defending the town against Spanish forces and pirates, the remaining sections serve as a historical reminder of the town’s medieval past while offering sweeping views of the Minho River and Atlantic.
As the article mentions, Caminha’s historical core features several significant architectural landmarks that trace the town’s evolution, namely:
- The impressive Main Church (Church of Nossa Senhora da Assunção), completed in 1556, harmonizes Gothic, Manueline, and Renaissance styles, notable for its granite façade, its fortress like tower, the early Renaissance Mareantes Chapel, and an intricately carved wooden ceiling.
- Nearby, the Misericórdia Church dates back to 1551 and uniquely functioned as both a place of worship and a hospital for the poor (pilgrims making their way to Santiago included), retaining its distinctive Renaissance Plateresque-style portal despite 17th-century renovations.
- Finally, the 12th-century Clock Tower, a prominent defensive relic and originally the Porta de Viana gateway, received its namesake clock in 1673. Now a National Monument housing a museum, it stands as the only medieval tower preserved in its original form.

Meandering the town’s historical streets
One does not even need to enter any of these historical buildings to enjoy this great coastal portuguese town. Meander through its peaceful cobblestone streets to appreciate the beautiful stone architecture that defines the town. Explore the quiet lanes at your own pace, stopping for a coffee or snack at local favorites like Trincaria Happy Food Bakery.
Be sure to pass the street’s main attraction, the central plaza. Built around the stunning Chafariz do Terreiro fountain completed in 1553 by João Lopes the Elder. This gorgeous Renaissance monument features a detailed design of multiple spouted basins, gargoyles, the arms of Portugal, and the Cross of the Order of Christ.
This square is a great place to just stop for a meal at one of the many spots available. The charming stone home of Casa Almeida, with its healthy local delicacies and private courtyard is often a favorite. Otherwise, Sebastião for casual pizza and pasta, is perfect for relaxing and people-watching from their terrace by the historic fountain on a warm sunny day.
Those wishing to stretch their legs beyond the town center will appreciate the stunning views from Camarido beach. A mere 3 kilometers before the city center, this beach has gorgeous sands and views across the water to Spain’s Santa Tecla hill. Closer by, the peaceful pathway following the Coura River from Parque 25 de Abril provides a lesser-known, quiet area to relax and unwind amidst nature.
